Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale: the basics
A chimpanzee trek in Kibale is a guided walk in the forest with a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) guide. You look for a group of wild chimpanzees, and when you find them you stay with them for up to one hour. Treks start at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, about 35 km from Fort Portal. You need a booking in advance, and you may not enter the forest on your own.
The whole outing takes 2 to 5 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are that day. The hour is the time you spend with the animals, not the length of the walk. A group has at most 6 people. UWA puts the success rate at over 90 percent, which is a good chance and not a promise.

How a trek works
From the visitor centre to the chimpanzees.
1. Book ahead and arrive early
UWA requires a booking in advance and asks you to arrive early for registration and the briefing. Bring your permit and a payment receipt, because you enter only with an authentic permit and a UWA guide.
2. Briefing at Kanyanchu
The guide explains the rules for the animals and splits the visitors into groups of no more than 6.
3. The walk
The guide leads your group into the forest to look for a chimpanzee community. The walk can be short or long. The tracking fee includes a nature walk on the same day.
4. Up to one hour with the animals
Once the group finds chimpanzees, you may stay for a maximum of one hour at a distance of at least 10 m. Then the guide leads you back.
Chimpanzee trekking Kibale: start times
Your permit shows your slot.
| Start | What to know |
|---|---|
| 8:00 a.m. | The morning start |
| 11:00 a.m. | A midday start that not every schedule includes, so confirm it when you book |
| 2:00 p.m. | The afternoon start |
The park gates are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. but that does not replace the slot on your permit. Rain is most frequent from March to May and from September to November, see the weather page. If you want a longer visit, the habituation experience lets you stay up to 4 hours with the animals.
Rules at the chimpanzees
These rules protect the animals, and they protect you.
Keep your distance
Stay at least 10 m away. Do not chase the chimpanzees and do not imitate their calls.
Stay home if you are ill
If you have a contagious illness, do not join the trek.
No flash
Photos are fine, but without flash. Stay calm and keep your voice low.
No smoking, eating or drinking
Smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed during the tracking. Follow your guide's instructions about water.
Take your litter with you
Keep the forest clean and leave nothing behind.
Chimp trekking Uganda: age, price and who can join
The points people ask about most.
Minimum age. The minimum age is 12 or 16 years, depending on which UWA rule applies. Do not assume the gorilla rule of 15 applies. Ask the booking agent which age applies before you pay for a child.
Price. The base price in 2026 is $250 for foreign non-residents, $200 for foreign residents and UGX 180,000 for citizens of the East African Community. The permit includes the park entry, the guide and a nature walk on the tracking day. In April, May and November a reduced rate of $200 and $150 applies, and discounted permits cannot be rebooked. A higher price of $300 is announced for January 2027. Check the current amount before you book. The permit page lists all categories.
Booking. Foreign non-residents book their permit through a licensed tour operator. If you book a tour, the listing says whether the permit and the park fees are included.
Other places to track. Kyambura is another entry point for primate tracking in Uganda, but it belongs to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The guide to the Kyambura Gorge explains it.

Read more about the chimpanzees, the other primates and the Bigodi walk, and plan the route on the getting there page.

How big are the trekking groups?
