Kibale National Park accommodation: where to stay

You can sleep in four places: at Kanyanchu in the park, at Bigodi south of the forest, by the crater lakes west of the park, or in Fort Portal. Kanyanchu is the visitor centre where chimpanzee trekking starts, about 35 km from town, and Bigodi lies another 5 km south.

The choice depends on your start time. Trekking begins in the morning or afternoon, so staying near the forest saves the drive. If you want restaurants, markets and transport, the town is easier. The page on chimpanzee trekking lists the start times.

For most visitors with a fixed trekking slot, a base near the forest is simplest. If you add the caves, hot springs and town, Fort Portal gives the more central base.

Trekking starts are at 08:00 and 14:00, and an 11:00 start may be offered. Your permit shows the actual slot. You must register and attend a briefing before you go, so arrive early. From Fort Portal, build the 35 km drive into your plan, and ask your accommodation how long it takes at your hour.

Budget cottages have also been available at Sebitoli. Check the current rates and whether they are open before you plan around them.

Example prices from a community reserve

The Nkuruba nature reserve by a crater lake is a non-profit project, and its 2026 prices are one example, not a regional average. Camping costs $10 per adult and $7 for children under 10. A tent can be rented for $8 per night.

Cottages are priced per cottage and night, not per person. A double bed and breakfast cottage is $70 per night, and a cottage with a lake view is $120. Check-in is from 13:00 and check-out is at 10:00. For overnight guests, the entry fee to the reserve is included in the price.

These examples do not show availability, transfers, trekking permits or child surcharges for the cottages. Ask about each when you book.
