How Kibale tours work
A Kibale tour is usually a chimpanzee trek with a transfer. Fort Portal is the base for most of them. The visitor centre at Kanyanchu lies about 35 km south-east of town, and the Bigodi wetland is another 5 km south. From Kampala you drive to western Uganda first, so the tour is a trip of at least a night or two, not a short city excursion.
The parts of a Kibale visit come from different providers: the chimpanzee trek and the habituation experience from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), a nature or bird walk in the park, and the Bigodi walk from a community project. There is no single ticket that covers all of them. A tour bundles them for you, and the listing says what is included.

What a Kibale tour can include
Prices are for foreign non-residents in 2026.
| Part of the trip | Time | Price | Provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chimpanzee tracking | 2 to 5 hours, up to 1 hour with the animals | $250, entry and guide included | UWA at Kanyanchu |
| Habituation experience | Up to 4 hours with the animals | $300, entry and guide included | UWA |
| Bird or day nature walk | โ | $40, entry extra | UWA |
| Bigodi swamp walk | Up to 3 hours, about 4.5 km | UGX 50,000 | Community project outside the park |
For most visitors, a two-day trip from Fort Portal is enough: one morning or afternoon on the chimpanzee trek, and the second half-day at the Bigodi wetland or the crater lakes. If you start in Kampala, add a day for the road in each direction. The permit page lists all fees, and the trekking page explains the rules.
Kampala to Kibale: the road on a tour
Distances are a guide, not a travel-time promise.
The road from Kampala to Kanyanchu via Fort Portal is about 335 km. Southern road routes can reach up to 525 km. Plan the transfer as a long day on the road, and ask the operator whether the first night is in Fort Portal or near the forest. If you prefer to skip part of the drive, a scheduled flight to Kasese is an option. It does not land in Kibale, so you still need a transfer. The getting there page has the details.
Tours from Fort Portal are shorter. The town is the usual base for a short stay, and the Fort Portal page lists what to see there. Where to sleep is on the lodges page.
Chimpanzee in Uganda: where Kibale fits
One park in a longer trip.
Kibale is a park for chimpanzees in Uganda, with an estimated 1,500 or more chimpanzees in at least 12 communities and 13 primate species. It combines well with the crater lakes, Amabere ga Nyinamwiru and Semuliki National Park, which are all day trips from Fort Portal.
Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda
Many trips pair chimpanzees with gorillas. Gorillas live in a different park. A gorilla permit is a different product: $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, $500 for Rest of Africa and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. The habituation experience for gorillas costs $1,500, $1,000, $1,000 and UGX 750,000. Read the guide to gorilla trekking in Bwindi. A gorilla trek does not replace a chimpanzee trek, and the other way round.
Add savanna animals
If you want lions, elephants and hippos as well, Queen Elizabeth National Park lies to the south of Kibale. Ask the operator for the driving time between the two stops, because it depends on the sector and the road.
What to check before you book a tour
Five questions that save surprises.
Are permit and park fees included?
The listing should say. Without them the tour price is only transport and a guide.
Which date and slot?
The start time is printed on the permit. Check it matches the day you arrive.
Which activity is it?
Tracking is up to one hour with the animals, habituation up to 4 hours. They are different products with different prices.
What is the cancellation rule?
Refund terms depend on the tour, so get them in writing.
Who is allowed to join?
The minimum age for tracking is 12 or 16. Confirm it for any child in your group.
Kibale tours: frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for Kibale?
One chimpanzee trek takes a morning or an afternoon. With the Bigodi walk or the crater lakes, a stay of two days from Fort Portal works well. From Kampala, add travel days on the road.
Can I do Kibale as a day trip from Kampala?
The road to Kanyanchu is about 335 km each way, so a day trip is a very long day. A stay of at least one night near Fort Portal is the practical choice.
Does the tour price include the chimpanzee permit?
That depends on the tour. The listing states whether the permit and the park fees are included. Check this before you compare prices.
Can I combine Kibale with gorillas?
Yes, many itineraries do. Gorillas are in Bwindi, which is another park, with its own permit. See the permit page for Kibale and the Bwindi guide for gorillas.
Is a Kibale tour safe?
Check your government's travel advice for western Uganda before you book, and ask the operator about the route. Do not drive at night outside Kampala if you can avoid it.
