What the chimpanzee habituation experience is

On the chimpanzee habituation experience you join the researchers and habituators who accompany a group of chimpanzees that is still getting used to people. It is the longer option in Kibale. A standard trek gives you up to one hour with the animals. Here the limit for your time with the chimpanzees is 4 hours. You need to book ahead.

Do not read this as a guaranteed day beside the animals. The 4 hours are the maximum time at the chimpanzees. The whole excursion is longer, and you can start from 6:30 a.m. How much you see depends on where the group moves and how the day goes, as on any wild-animal walk.

For most visitors, the standard trek is enough: it is cheaper and shorter, and the trekking page explains how it works. Choose the habituation experience if you want to watch chimpanzees for longer, to see how a group goes about its day, and you are ready for a long morning in the forest.

Season, rules and practical points

What to expect on the day.

Season. Tracking and habituation run all year. Rain is most frequent from March to May and from September to November, so expect wet paths in those months. The weather page has the figures.

Rules. The guide briefs you before you start. Rules known from the standard trek are a good guide: keep at least 10 m from the chimpanzees, use no flash, and stay home if you have a contagious illness.

Age. Ask the booking agent for the minimum age for the habituation experience. The minimum age for chimpanzee tracking is 12 or 16 years, so check before you pay for a child.

Where it starts. Kibale lies near Fort Portal in western Uganda, and the visitor centre at Kanyanchu is about 35 km from town. Ask your booking agent for the meeting point and time. For the road from Kampala, see the page on getting there.
