Fort Portal at a glance
Fort Portal lies in western Uganda and has held city status since 2020. The Central Division covers the town centre, the administration, the markets, including Mpanga Market, and the seat of the Tooro Kingdom. At the 2024 census about 66,783 people lived in the Central Division alone.
Most visitors use the town as a base. Kanyanchu, where chimpanzee trekking starts, is about 35 km to the southeast, and the Bigodi wetland lies another 5 km south. If you plan to track chimpanzees, read the guide to chimpanzee trekking in Kibale before you pick your days in town.

Things to do in Fort Portal
The town itself is a half day. The surroundings fill the rest.
Walk the centre and the markets
The centre is compact and easy on foot. Mpanga Market is one of the markets in the centre.
Tooro Botanical Gardens
The gardens are at Plot 2, Njara Road. Entry is UGX 10,000 for residents and UGX 20,000 for non-residents, so do not plan on free entry. The gardens offer guided garden walks and birdwatching. Ask at the gate about opening hours and child prices.
Crafts and tea country
Baskets and gourds are sold in craft shops in town. Tea plantations cover the hills around Fort Portal and make an easy drive for photos.
Day trips
The crater lakes and the Amabere caves are close to town. Kibale and Bigodi are south. The hot springs of Semuliki need a full day.

Tooro Kingdom
The Tooro Kingdom dates its founding to 1822, when Kaboyo Olimi I broke away from Bunyoro-Kitara. The royal seat is the Karuziika Palace on Karuziika Hill above Fort Portal. You may also see the name spelled Karuzika. It is the same place.
The kingdom announced the death of Omukama Oyo on 27 August 2026, and Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I took the throne on 29 September 2026. Opening arrangements at the palace can change with mourning events and the change of reign. Plan to see the hill from the outside and ask locally before you plan a visit inside.
Treat the kingdom with the respect you would show any living institution. Ask before you photograph people, and do not assume an audience with the king is possible.
